Why That Death Happened

It was a day for Ganesh departure.  We all family members after finishing Pooja and others rituals did return home. The moment we reached home, I received a phone call from the hospital, stating that one patient with severe breathlessness had come to causality, they were shifting her to ICU and her condition was very bad. I said OK and decided to go the hospital, but for my dinner.

As it was Ganesh departure day, all roads were busy. It really took hard for me reach the hospital, but I made it. Once I reached the hospital our intensivist with their team was full in action, doing CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation). After the prolonged effort,  nearly for one hour patient was declared dead. When this matter was disclosed to patient’s relatives, they became panic. They were not convinced about the sudden death of their dear one. One among them became very violent and was asking in a loud voice regarding the cause of death.

Above like incidences are not uncommon in the hospitals. Patients reaching the hospital, at last few minutes before death. Doctors may find it difficult to find the cause of death. Doctor’s diagnosis depends on clinical examination and investigations. At the last few minutes before death, time to examine and to do the investigations is very difficult as there is hardly any time for it. At such time doctor focus is to check breathing and beating heart, unless these are restored, the patient will die.

At such time circulation and oxygenation is in jeopardy. Body to live needs uninterrupted circulation and oxygenation. Most clinical finding depends on intact circulation and breathing (oxygenation). So, for a doctor, if patient dies in no time after reaching, he ends up guessing, i.e. common causes of death rather than being sure about the cause of death. Most importantly patient’s past history like having had a heart attack in past, or being diabetic or hypertensive or stroke may give some clue regarding the cause of death.

Sudden cardiac death is one more entity. In this otherwise normal person is found  dead unexpectedly. More often these could be a heart attack, an individual with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, family history of sudden unexplained death and heart arrhythmias. List of the cause of sudden cardiac death is long.

The message I want to give from this article is sudden death are possible. It is unfair to blame hospital or doctor for such deaths. Doctor depends on their clinical judgment . It is incorrect to suspect them always.
