Is that all doctor?

Some times in professional life we doctors face difficult times.  All the patients do not get alright; we may fail to save the patient or treat up to expectation of our patients or their relatives. Apart from treating patients doctor is also challenged by managing relatives of patients.

In this article I am enlisting different kind of problems which doctors face. Most of them at the outset appear very simple but they are hard digest on routine bases. They may even lead frustration to doctors. Nevertheless they are part of profession, so we have to learn how to manage them.

Situation 1
Relatives of patients are more often apprehensive of disease and the consequences. As expected they have high expectation from treatment. But sometimes for a disease, the treatment possible and feasible is limited so result may not be good.  Treatment sometimes is equally very expensive. So relatives distressed by financial constraints and expectation tend get more and more anguish. When such is the case they reach the treating doctor more repeatedly and ask more and more questions. Questions tend to be same, but asked repeatedly. To answer repeatedly same questions to all relatives for doctor is really a test of his patience.

Situation 2
When doctor says prognosis is not good, relatives may suspect doctors authenticity of diagnosis and treatment. Such a behavior may hurt treating doctor, who is truly fighting to save the patient.  In such a situation doctor should allow the patient to take their decision and guide the relatives to go for other option. This may even need to change of him.

Situation 3
In some situations patient comes in emergency at very odd hour like middle of night, a doctor struggles all the night and settles the patient, and next day morning if patients says I want go to different doctor, it really hurts. In such situation, doctor should smiling allow the patient go where ever he or she wish to.

Situation 4
Patient sometimes comes to hospital in better shape but after getting treatment patient may start worsening, sometimes this may happen unexpectedly; patient may even die without giving clue. To manage the scene then for doctor is very difficult. Patient relatives may blame the doctor for all that bad happened to patient.

Situation 5
You may be called for difficult case to be intervened, results of such procedure may not be good, and this can lead bad reputation to treating doctor. A balanced doctor would predict the complication before the procedure. So he or she would be ready to handle the complication. One simple dictum do not attempt a procedure, if you do not know how manage the complications. Always be preferred to manage the complication with shying away.
